A dedicated funeral professional who has spent 40 years supporting families in their time of need has been recognised for his remarkable contribution to both the profession and his local community.
Michael Rushton, Dip. FD, recently marked 40 years in the funeral profession, a milestone that reflects his unwavering commitment to the families he serves and the values that have guided him throughout his career.
Beginning his career in March 1986, Mike credits much of his work ethic and approach to caring for families to the influence of the late Tony Jolly, whose guidance helped shape the compassionate professional he is today. Over the past four decades, Mike has supported thousands of families, something he considers a privilege rather than an achievement.
Reflecting on his career, Mike said: “It is not about me, it is all about the families and their loved ones, doing everything we can to help and giving a professional service with a personal touch. That is something myself and our incredible team proudly do to this day.”
Known for his humility and dedication, Mike has also generously shared his knowledge and experience with colleagues, professionals, clergy and community organisations throughout his career. Messages of appreciation from those who have worked alongside him over the years highlighted the lasting impact he has had both within the profession and beyond.
In recent years, Mike has reduced his working hours to help care for his disabled children, while continuing to meet families and conduct funerals on a regular basis. He remains deeply committed to serving his community and values the opportunity to balance his professional and family responsibilities.
Mike said: “I have gone from being on call 24/7 to more part-time hours, allowing me to help care for my children who need me, yet still be able to work in the funeral home with my team, caring for my community, which means so much to me.”
As part of the celebrations, Mike also expressed his gratitude to local knitting group Southport Hookers for creating a striking knitted post box topper outside the funeral home, a gesture he described as both thoughtful and appreciated.
Looking ahead, Mike remains as passionate about his profession as ever, saying he hopes to see his 50th year in a career that continues to bring purpose and fulfilment.
